Fall 2026 Puppetry Workshop: Worbla Techniques for the Puppet Maker (Level 1) with Chicago Puppet Studio register now Worbla Techniques for the Puppet Maker (Level 1) with Chicago Puppet Studio Chicago Puppet Studio artists take participants through a four-day process in the use of Worbla, a unique and versatile thermoplastic that has incredible uses for puppet artists and puppet makers. During the 24 hours of this 4 day workshop, students will: 1. Create their own puppet head in plasticine clay 2. Make a negative mold of that head using a simple, tried-and-true papier-mâché process 3. Cast a lightweight Worbla head that can be painted, modified and prepared for performance. 4. Learn specific use of modeling techniques, heat gun, heat knife and possibly hot water bath in working with Worbla. Students should come prepared on the first day with sketches, inspirational images, and/or ideas about the head they want to sculpt. Workshop Details Instructors: Chicago Puppet Studio Dates/Times: Saturday, Nov 7 Sunday, Nov 8 Saturday, Nov 14 Sunday, Nov 15 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. CST Contact Hours: 4 x 6 hour sessions over 2 weeks Location: Fine Arts Building, Studio 433 410 S. Michigan Ave Cost: $365 Regular Workshop fee includes: —1 block of plasticine clay (oil clay) for head sculpture —Sufficient Worbla to cast the head —Use of studio tools and materials —Interaction/feedback with our skilled puppet artisans Previous experience working with sculptural materials like paper mache and clay is a plus. Students should be prepared to work with their hands. Note: Early registration for this workshop is encouraged. 2-4 weeks in advance of the workshops, students will pick up their plasticine block from the Fine Arts Building and begin work at home on their head sculptures.
