DESCRIPTION Designed for beginners, new baristas, and home brewers, Introduction to Coffee is a comprehensive survey of the coffee production process, from past and present agricultural practices, to grading, processing, roasting, and brewing. This class is an ideal place for students to begin their professional education and to narrow down or solidify their learning goals. It is also fitting for enthusiasts who want to learn more about the coffee world. CURRICULUM Coffee’s history and origins The coffee production process, from farming to brewing Coffee-producing practices, regions, and markets Basic coffee cupping Introduction to Coffee is a highly-recommended prerequisite to all other Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) classes, and no prior knowledge of coffee is required to register. This is a half-day class consisting of lecture and cupping. After passing the exam, students will receive a certificate of recognition from the SCA. MORE INFORMATION Exams and Certification All written exams for the SCA are hosted online and distributed via email. SCA exam and certification fees are included in the cost for tickets, and are optional for students who take class recreationally. If you wish to participate in exams, your SCA ID is required on the first day of class. Please arrive with your SCA ID prepared to share with your instructor. If you are not registered for an SCA ID, please review the instructions to register. Invitation links to your written exam will be sent out within 7 days of the last day of your class. Students have 7 days from the date invitations are sent to accept the exam link. Students who fail to accept the exam link within 7 days will automatically be removed from the exam and will be no longer eligible for certification. While we want each student to succeed in receiving their certification, your classmates are not able to access their exams until every participating student accepts their invitation. Please be mindful of your classmates and accept your SCA exam invite in a timely manner. Instructor | Kaleena Teoh Kaleena Teoh is a co-founder at Coffee Project NY, the Academy’s Director of Education and a certified AST (Authorized SCA Trainer) and oversees all Academy lesson plans and curricula. She has a background in psychology, speech pathology, and social work and is fluent in Chinese, Japanese, and American Sign Language. SCA Coffee Skills Diploma Introduction to Coffee is worth 10 points toward the 100-point SCA Coffee Skills Diploma requirement.
