About this event
One of 4 upcoming events at East Providence Historical Society, and 390 across Providence.
Join us at Newman Cemetery on Saturday, October 17, 2026, from 1:00–3:00 p.m. for a special look at the oldest cemetery in East Providence. Patrick Hanner of the City’s Planning Department will discuss the ongoing efforts to preserve the cemetery’s historic gravestones, create a more welcoming destination for history and genealogy enthusiasts, and enhance the cemetery as a valued space for the surrounding neighborhood. Meredith Bonds-Harmon, Library Director, will highlight the work of prominent gravestone carvers represented in the cemetery and their trademark styles. TNT Gravestone Solutions will be on hand to demonstrate historic gravestone repair techniques and discuss the proper methods for preserving these fragile monuments. Attendees will also learn the correct procedures for cleaning historic gravestones and have an opportunity to try their hand at cleaning. The afternoon will also include an opportunity to tour the gravestones of Revolutionary War soldiers buried at Newman Cemetery, as well as examples of the work of master stone carvers from the region. Come discover the history, artistry, and stories preserved in one of East Providence’s most important historic places.
