Julian H. Kreeger Memorial Concert Buy Tickets → New York Philharmonic Quartet The New York Philharmonic Quartet joins Alexander Fiterstein (clarinet) at the UM Knight Center for Music Innovation in FOCM’s 71st Anniversary Season. An evening celebrating the artistry and collaboration at the heart of chamber music. The string quartet has long been regarded as chamber music’s most refined form of musical dialogue. Joined by clarinetist Alexander Fiterstein, four principal musicians of the New York Philharmonic explore the expressive possibilities created when individual virtuosity meets thoughtful collaboration. Their performance reflects the essence of chamber music: attentive listening, shared interpretation, and the dynamic exchange of musical ideas that has captivated audiences for centuries. Watch & Listen Watch the New York Philharmonic Quartet Artist Spotlight Coming Soon The Artists String Quartet New York Philharmonic Quartet The New York Philharmonic String Quartet comprises four Principal musicians from the Orchestra: Concertmaster Frank Huang (The Charles E. Culpeper Chair); Principal Second Violin Group Qianqian Li; Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps (The Mr. and Mrs. Frederick P. Rose Chair); and Principal Cello Carter Brey (The Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Chair). The group was formed in January 2017, during the Philharmonic’s 175th anniversary season; the New York Philharmonic String Quartet made its debut as the solo ensemble in John Adams’s Absolute Jest in New York in March 2017, and reprised the work on the Orchestra’s EUROPE / SPRING 2017 tour. All four members are multiple prize winners, have appeared as concerto soloists with the Philharmonic and orchestras around the world, and have appeared frequently in the Philharmonic’s chamber music series at David Geffen Hall and Merkin Concert Hall. More about the New York Philharmonic Quartet → Clarinet Alexander Fiterstein Alexander Fiterstein is recognized as one of today’s most exceptional clarinetists. He has performed in recital, with distinguished orchestras, and with chamber music ensembles throughout the world. He won first prize at the Carl Nielsen International Clarinet Competition and received the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant Award. The Washington Post has described his playing as “dazzling in its spectrum of colors, agility, and range. Every sound he makes is finely measured without inhibiting expressiveness” and The New York Times described him as “a clarinetist with a warm tone and powerful technique.” As soloist he has appeared with the Czech, Israel, Vienna, and St. Paul Chamber Orchestras, Belgrade Philharmonic, Danish National Radio Symphony, Tokyo Philharmonic, China National Symphony Orchestra, KBS Orchestra of South Korea, Jerusalem Symphony, Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Lincoln Center, Kansas City Symphony, and the Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela. He has performed in recital on the Music at the Supreme Court Series, the Celebrity Series in Boston, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Kennedy Center, the Louvre in Paris, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Tel Aviv Museum, and NYC’s 92d Street Y.
