This online series illuminates what kinds of food were eaten by different people in the past. This year, in honor of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, we’re kicking off the season with recipes from the bicentennial and centennial celebrations of the United States of America. Starting in January, we’ll return to more historic dishes including those eaten by one of the following groups: the Mason family; people enslaved at Gunston Hall; the white laborers, shopkeepers, and tenant farmers; and the peoples native to this land. Participants will learn how social class and wealth affected what food people had access to. Kids and adults alike will have a great time learning history while cooking during each 45-minute session! This program is designed for families with kids 10-18 but is open to participants of all ages. All sessions are complimentary. November 7 – Martha Washington’s Custard Trifle – A Bicentennial Recipe December 12 – Washington Cake – A Centennial Recipe January 9 – Onion Pie February 13 – Malinda Russell’s Old Maids March 13 – French Salad Registration Click on each event link above to register for this complimentary program.
