About this event
One of 1,545 upcoming events at Hawaii State Public Library System.
Join us on Saturday, November 7th at 11:30am for a free film screening of Hunting in Wartime, the 2016 winner of the Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism. Directed by UH-West Oahu Academy of Creative Media Professor Samantha Farinella, this moving documentary profiles the extraordinary stories of Vietnam War veterans from the village of Hoonah, Alaska; a village that produced a disproportionately high number of soldiers that went to war in Vietnam. These Native American soldiers experienced discrimination growing up and many also felt it after the War in having their fishing livelihood compromised. Add the public negativity felt by many Vietnam vets after coming home, as well as issues such as PTSD, depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, and suicide, and you’d expect these men to be completely embittered. However, they were not. A Q&A session with film director Samantha Farinella will follow the screening of the film. Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for effective communication, or a modification of policies or procedures to participate in a program, service, or activity should contact library staff as soon as possible. Advance requests 48 hours or more before the event are encouraged, but not required. All programs are subject to change. See a schedule of upcoming events on the HSPLS Events Calendar.
