About this event

As part of MA250 and Bev400, Historic Beverly invites the public to a one-night program exploring Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, the pamphlet that helped turn revolutionary debate into a movement for independence. Published in early 1776, Common Sense was written for ordinary readers and circulated widely throughout Massachusetts and New England. Paine’s clear, forceful arguments against monarchy and in favor of self-government resonated deeply in a region already shaped by political organizing, print culture, and resistance to British authority. This program combines a short illustrated talk with guided discussion, inviting participants to consider Common Sense in its historical moment and to reflect on its lasting influence 250 years later. Together, we will explore how revolutionary ideas were communicated to broad audiences, why Massachusetts played such a central role in their spread, and how Paine’s language continues to shape American civic life. No prior knowledge is required. All are welcome. Download the pamphlet here: https://tinyurl.com/35scjkkm Also available online at the Beverly Public Library
