About this event
One of 2 upcoming events at Kahaluu Bay Education Center.
Join The Kohala Center for our upcoming Hoaʻāina Stewardship Day at Niuliʻi! These half-day stewardship opportunities are designed for community members to meet each other and deepen their pilina (relationship) with ‘āina as a hui (collective). Our cherished ‘ili ‘āina (traditional land divisions within an ahupuaʻa) at Niuliʻi guides us to foster the knowledge, values, and skills needed to care for places that care for us in many ways. In North Kohala near Kēōkea Beach Park, Niuli‘i is home to a magnificent hala grove and holds great potential to grow and produce food for community once again. Our stewardship efforts focus on strengthening the health of the existing coastal hala forest while advancing community-led planning for expanded food production and agroforestry. With the substantial amounts of rain and wind Kohala has received in the past months, our hana this month will focus on…weeding and cleanup! Non-native grasses and vines compromise the health and well-being of our native trees and shrubs, so we’ll work together to give our beloved hoa lā‘au (plant friends) space to breathe, grow, and thrive. Register for October 28 at Niuliʻi We provide the tools and drinking water needed for each day’s hana. We’ll gather for lunch around noon so please bring your lunch, reusable beverage container, and any snacks you’d like to have on hand. Space is limited, so sign up today! Details on where to meet and what to bring will be emailed to registrants prior to each event. For more information, please contact us at [email protected] or 808-887-6411.
