About this event
One of 13 upcoming events at Latchis Theatre.
The Windham Philharmonic, under Music Director Hugh Keelan, presents A Concert of Gratitude and Representation on Monday, November 9th at 7pm at the Latchis Theatre, Brattleboro. Four of the evening’s pieces were written in 1694, 1847, 1888 and 1939. The other four were written this year of Our Lady, 2026. Gratitude is rich and simple. We are grateful that music is a life force. We are grateful to the composers and to the community that loves and supports us; we are grateful to give and receive gifts. Representation is the program itself: eight composers given our undivided attention, half of them rarities, the other half newly written, gifted to us. Kirsten C. Kunkle, a friend of the orchestra of the Mvskoke Nation, has written the solemn and ecstatic opener, All of My People. Ruth Crawford Rissolty Rossolty, a sly 1939 fantasy on American fiddle tunes, is a little scherzo interlude. The Adagio cantabile from Louise Farrenc’s Symphony No. 3 spins out one long, unhurried song, and Cécile Chaminade’s famous Scarf Dance from her ballet Callirhoé is the dance finale. The evening then turns to offerings. Adrianne Greenbaum performs her own FleytMuzik: a shepherd’s lament, a song of life, and a dance. Kelsey Gallagher follows with a new work for clarinet and noise. Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de la Guerre’s 1694 overture to Céphale et Procris then returns the music to its oldest foundations. The evening closes with Miriam Sharrock’s Quondam, featuring the orchestra’s newly donated timpani. Adrianne Greenbaum, the “Queen of the Klezmer Flute,” was Principal Flute of the New Haven Symphony and is a leading figure in returning the flute to its old place in klezmer. Kelsey Gallagher is a clarinetist and composer. The two met playing for TUNDI Productions at the Latchis, and their pieces sit side by side on this program Our concert also celebrates a gift: Ron Holdman’s donation of a set of timpani to the Windham Philharmonic. Steve Rice is the timpani soloist. Admission is by donation at the door. Visit windhamphilharmonic.org
