About this event
One of 12 upcoming events at Mid America Veterans Museum, and 570 across St. Louis Metro.
We invite you to join us for this 4-day event in honor and remembrance of the 13 souls who lost their lives on August 26, 2021, while supporting non-combatant evacuation operations amidst a high-risk security environment. These military comrades wrote the ultimate check in efforts to secure Abbey Gate at Kabul’s Hamid Karzai International Airport in Afghanistan. One of those 13 was our very own St. Charles County resident, Jared Schmitz, just 20 years old. This event will span over 4 days, with each day bringing something different in remembrance, reflection, and honor. Schedule of Events: August 24, 2026 6pm – Private Reception 7pm – Memorial opens to the public August 25, 2026 7pm – Candlelight Vigil August 26, 2026 7pm – Commemoration Ceremony August 27, 2026 10am – Memorial display closes This event is open to the public starting at 7pm on August 24th, and the museum and its grounds will remain open 24/7 until 10am on August 27th.
