MBT Lookout Sessions Presents Henry Diltz has shot more than 250 album covers and thousands of publicity shots in the ’60s and ’70s, including the iconic Morrison Hotel cover for The Doors. His work is celebrated for his unique “fly on the wall” style portraits and his ability to capture intimate moments with some of the world’s most influential musicians, including the Eagles, Neil Young, Crosby Stills & Nash, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, America, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Jimi Hendrix, Paul McCartney, The Monkees, and David Cassidy. A popular musician in the 1960s, Diltz never set out to take some of the most iconic photos of our era — it just happened. Fresh from a globetrotting childhood, he attended colleges in Munich, West Point, and Honolulu, where he became known as a musician and founding member of the Modern Folk Quartet. This led to many friendships with emerging recording artists in the California rock communities of the ‘60s and ’70s. Immersed in this world, Diltz accidentally discovered a passion for photography, which turned into an obsession and later occupation. “I was a musician before I was a photographer,” says Diltz. “So I started out photographing my friends who then all happened to become famous!” Diltz was the official photographer at the historic Woodstock Music festival in 1969, 1994, & 1999. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, LIFE, People, Rolling Stone, High Times, and Billboard. Diltz has recently been recognized with Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Grammys, the Lucie’s, the International Photography Hall of Fame, Abbey Road Studios, and the American Society of Photographers.
