About this event
One of 9 upcoming events at National Museum of Civil War Medicine.
The “Faces of Civil War Nurses” exhibit, a collaboration with Military Images magazine, will be on display at the Beverly Heritage Center with the Rich Mountain Battlefield Foundation, in Beverly, WV, from October 3, 2026 through January 29, 2027. The exhibit features 20 life-sized portraits and personal stories of women who served as nurses during the Civil War. It debuted at the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum in Washington, D.C., on May 24, 2025. At the outset of the Civil War, females were forbidden to serve in “indelicate” medical settings, but women quickly broke down such social conventions, risking both disease and the brutal realities of war to care for the sick and wounded. More than 20,000 women served as nurses during the conflict, providing invaluable aid, including changing bandages, cooking food, comforting the dying, and innumerable other tasks. The Beverly Heritage Center is located at 4 Court Street, Beverly, WV 26253. For more information: https://beverlyheritagecenter.org/ Thank you to our sponsors!
