Behind the Sign: The Wit and History of El Arroyo

@ Few Austin landmarks are as instantly recognizable—or as reliably funny—as the sign outside El Arroyo. Join Clay McPhail, a former writer of the restaurant’s iconic messages, for a behind-the-scenes look at the history, humor, and creative process behind one of Austin’s most beloved traditions. Clay will share how the signs evolved, where the ideas came from, and what it takes to turn a few carefully chosen words into something memorable enough to make commuters laugh, spark conversations, and travel far beyond Austin on social media. Along the way, members will hear stories from behind the sign and gain a new appreciation for the creativity, timing, and distinctly Austin personality that helped make El Arroyo a cultural touchstone.
