Advanced FPP Globe Wed Oct 28, 2026 10:30 am – 2:30 pm Cost: $40 Instructor: Maggie Emmens Please call to reserve your seat as space is limited. 603-373-0151. The Brigitte Heitland (Zen Chic) “Globe” pattern is a fun paper piecing challenge with Y-seams for the experienced quilter. The faceted gem is the focal point of this calm and centered composition. This pattern requires one patterned Layer Cake* plus some yardage. Purchase of the pattern is a requirement of this class — many shops carry this in PDF form for last minute purchase. You should be familiar with Foundation Paper Piecing (FPP). Please note that this class requires PRE-WORK to be successful. Maggie will give you all the tips and tricks (and a few cheat sheets) to make this quilt a success! *a Layer Cake (LC) is a stack of 42 curated 10” squares from a fabric line Fabric Requirements: When selecting your Layer Cake, ensure that there is a range of light, medium, and dark fabrics. Patterned fabric works best. You should be able to divide it into seven color values from darkest to lightest, where the darkest and lightest is just one 10” square each. Ensure your 1 yard of background fabric is a solid (complementary to the patterned fabrics in the LC) and light enough in value to make the center faceted gem pop! Tool Requirements: Sewing machine in good working order, with a NEW needle (extra needles, as needed). Please remember the foot pedal and power cord! Open toe foot Bright light or light table Add-A-Quarter-Plus ruler (6″ or 12″) Glue stick (the purple Elmer’s School Gluestick is perfect) Both paper scissors and fabric scissors Tweezers (for sewing the curves; removing paper) Short and narrow cutting ruler (eg., 2½” x 8½”, or similar), having no grip points is helpful but not required Mid size cutting ruler (eg., 6″ x 12″) Rotary cutter, with a NEW blade (extra blades, may be needed) Pins and needles, pin cushion Thread (coordinate with fabric) Snips Seam ripper Note taking materials (eg., notebook, paper, pen/pencil) Required Pre-Work (and bring to class): Download the template sheets from the QR code that comes with the pattern (Globe templates letter size). Print out the templates (p. 5,6,7) on card stock or copy paper at 100% (the default is 91%, so check and make sure). Using paper scissors, cut each template piece accurately on the dotted lines! Use glue stick to assemble. Print out 6 copies of the FPP pattern (p. 1,2,3,4 (aka p.A1,A2,B1,B2)) on newsprint, FPP paper, or lightweight copy paper at 100% (the default is 91%, so check and make sure). Use glue stick (not tape) to assemble each of the sections. Use the helpful marks on the edges to assemble the four pages. If you choose to cut out the FPP sections (A and B) after glueing together, leave at least ¼” or ½” around the outside cutting lines. Lightly starch all of the LC squares (use Best Press, Niagara non-aerosol, or the equivalent) — use a DRY iron. Since there are several angles, this will prevent stretching. Do not cut LC fabrics! Note: Be careful with the starch as templates A1 and A2 are a tight fit to the 10” squares. Separate your Layer Cake by value into seven, from darkest to lightest, see attached colored Diagram of the Front View. Notice that the darkest and lightest will only need one 10” square each. Use the attached colored Diagram of the Front View to arrange your 10” squares and label each one accordingly. For example, Section 1:A2. Sometimes you may use a fabric square once, or more than once. By being careful, from each 10” you can have: One A1; or Two A3/A4; or Two or three B1/B2; or One A2 and one B1/B2 Bring the attached colored Diagram of the Front View (this is very important for organization in this pattern, explained in class). Note: this color diagram is not included in the pattern and is a helpful add-on by Maggie. From the solid background fabric, cut 4 strips 5½” WOF (border); then lightly starch the remaining fabric. This helps keep the fabric from stretching. Cut 2 squares 11½ “ x 11½”, cut in half diagonally to make four triangles (D). . Cut 8 rectangles 3½” x 9 ½” (C). Check out the list on the whiteboard at the shop! Please call to reserve your seat as these days fill quickly and space is limited. 603-373-0151.
