A member of the Penobscot Nation, Jason Brown grew up on Panawamskek (Indian Island) in the Penobscot River, within his ancestral homeland in central Maine. Through music, storytelling, technology, and visual performance, Firefly creates a bridge between generations, sharing Wabanaki traditions while exploring the future of Indigenous art. Firefly’s performances blend traditional Wabanaki vocals and instruments with contemporary electronic music, immersive visuals, and audience participation. His dynamic stage presence invites audiences into an experience that is deeply rooted in history while embracing innovation and the future of Indigenous expression. In 2023, Firefly became the first Wabanaki artist to perform at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and collaborated with the Bangor Symphony Orchestra on the world premiere of militakwat, creating a groundbreaking work rooted in Wabanaki songs. His performances have been featured throughout Maine and across the country, including the Kennedy Center’s Arts Across America series, the Maine Historical Society, the Portland Museum of Art, the Abbe Museum, and the Farnsworth Art Museum. A grandson of an elected Penobscot tribal chief who guided his nation through a historic Native rights struggle, Firefly carries forward a legacy of resilience, creativity, and cultural connection. His work celebrates Indigenous voices while inviting audiences of all backgrounds to experience the power of music, movement, and shared stories.
