Journey through the Great Romantic Piano Tradition Buy Tickets → The Immortals Tian Ying (piano) performs at the UM Knight Center for Music Innovation in FOCM’s 71st Anniversary Season. This recital brings together three composers who expanded the expressive possibilities of the piano while leaving an enduring mark on its repertoire. Rachmaninoff’s Variations on a Theme of Corelli and monumental Second Piano Sonata frame the program with works of sweeping lyricism and virtuosity. Between them stand Beethoven’s groundbreaking Waldstein Sonata and selections from Scriabin’s Preludes and Études, tracing a fascinating path from Classical innovation to the mystical harmonies of the early twentieth century. On the Program Rachmaninoff Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op. 42 Beethoven Sonata Op. 53 “Waldstein” Scriabin 5 Preludes, Op. 16 Scriabin Etudes, Op. 8, No. 11, 12 Rachmaninoff Sonata No. 2, Op. 36 Watch & Listen Watch Tian Ying Artist Spotlight Coming Soon The Artist Piano Tian Ying Praised by the Boston Globe as “one of the finest pianists active in America,” Tian Ying, winner of many prestigious awards, including high honors at the Eighth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 1989, has become well-known for his eloquent, poetic, and dramatically intense performances. During the 2010-11 season alone, Tian Ying performed 9 different concerti with orchestras across the US. The Boston Globe chose his Bank of Boston Celebrity Series concert as one of the Top Ten in classical music events.
