Lessons in History with Frank O’Reilly Retreat from Victory: The Battle of Malvern Hill Saturday, September 12, 2026 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM The National Civil War Museum is pleased to welcome acclaimed historian Frank O’Reilly for a compelling installment of our Lessons in History series. The Battle of Malvern Hill, fought on July 1, 1862, marked the dramatic climax of the Seven Days Battles outside Richmond. Although the Union army occupied an exceptionally strong defensive position and inflicted staggering losses on Confederate forces, it unexpectedly withdrew—turning what could have been a decisive victory into a strategic retreat. In this engaging presentation, O’Reilly explores why the battle was fought despite overwhelming odds, how it shaped the reputations of some of the Civil War’s most prominent commanders, and why the devastating Confederate assaults haunted Robert E. Lee’s army for the remainder of the war. Discover how one of the Civil War’s most misunderstood battles influenced the course of the conflict and the lives of those who fought it. This program is free to attend. Regular Museum admission applies for those wishing to tour the Museum galleries. Following the presentation, Frank O’Reilly will sign copies of his latest book, Retreat from Victory: The Battle of Malvern Hill. About the Presenter Francis Augustín “Frank” O’Reilly is an acclaimed Civil War historian and former National Park Service historian with nearly 40 years of battlefield interpretation experience. He is the award-winning author of several books, including The Fredericksburg Campaign: Winter War on the Rappahannock, a Pulitzer Prize-nominated work, and his latest release, Retreat from Victory: The Battle of Malvern Hill (2026). O’Reilly has appeared in numerous documentaries, lectured internationally on military history, and is widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading Civil War historians.
