Across Baseball’s Color Line: Philadelphia Colored Giants & Brunswick Leagues in the 1920s and ‘30s In the early part of the 20th century, northern New England was apparently a welcoming place for Black leagues to play ball. The Philadelphia Colored Giants played numerous games in Maine including in Brunswick against town and mill teams. This lively presentation by a noted media and sports historian shares the story of the PCG team, but also the fascinating tale of a crackerjack Brunswick player, Dominic Paiement, who went on to a long career in the minors. Presenter: Donna L. Halper has spent four decades as a professor of media studies, working at several Boston-area universities. A former radio deejay, credited with having discovered the rock band Rush, Dr. Halper reinvented herself and got her PhD at age 64. She is a media historian with expertise in the history of broadcasting including the study, Invisible Stars: A Social History of Women in American Broadcasting. She writes about the history of baseball for the Society for American Baseball Research. Halper was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2023. FREE TO JOIN BUT PLEASE REGISTER
