Thursday, October 15, 2026 4:30–6:00 PM Whipple Field, Smithfield, RI Suit up and get into the Woonasquatucket River for a hands-on look at the fish that call it home! Join WRWC for Community Fish Sampling and Identification and help us collect environmental data on the diversity of aquatic life in the Woonasquatucket River. Participants will work alongside our team to catch, identify, measure, and release fish while learning what they can tell us about the health of the river. WRWC uses electrofishing, a scientific fish sampling technique, to temporarily capture fish so they can be identified and measured before being safely released back into the river. By monitoring fish populations in different parts of the Woonasquatucket, we can better understand how water quality and habitat conditions affect aquatic life throughout the watershed. The information collected also contributes to an up-to-date fish survey for the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM). During this event, you’ll learn about the sampling process, help identify fish, and pick up identification tips from our resident expert. No experience is necessary. We provide all equipment and training. You provide your curiosity and enthusiasm! Please arrive on time so you can receive important safety instructions and information before sampling begins. This event is family-friendly. WRWC will provide waders and boots, or you may bring your own water boots. Be prepared to get wet and muddy! Participants must be at least 4’10” tall to fit into our waders and enter the water. Shorter participants are welcome to take part in on-land observation, fish identification, and other activities. If the registration fee presents a financial hardship, our No One Turned Away for Lack of Funds (NOTAFLOF) policy allows you to choose the discount that best meets your needs.
