Things to do on Long Island this week: the perfect fall weekend

Fall is special on Long Island, and this year it comes roaring in. The North Fork is harvesting, Long Beach is pouring pumpkin beer, and the first weekend of October is stacked. If we were building the perfect weekend, here's how it would go.

Saturday, 10am: start on the farm

Fall starts on the North Fork. The 45th annual Country Fair at Hallockville takes over a 28-acre preserved farm homestead in Riverhead from 10am to 4pm, Saturday and Sunday. Farm life, local history, a whole community out in the fields. This is the Long Island fall day people move here for.

Saturday, noon: see a piece of 1779

Then head west to Stony Brook, where the Long Island Museum is free from 12 to 5pm for its 12th annual Culper Spy Day. The reason to go is one piece of paper: the only known surviving letter between spymaster Benjamin Tallmadge and Robert Townsend, alias Samuel Culper Jr., written November 8, 1779. Washington's spy ring ran right through here, and the Culper Spy Day tours at the Brewster House in Setauket take you inside it.

Saturday, 8pm: New Orleans comes to Port Washington

End the day loud. Jon Cleary brings New Orleans funk and R&B to Landmark on Main Street at 8pm. If you'd rather sit by the water, Nobuntu plays Concerts by the Pond in Cold Spring Harbor at 7:30, a night billed as joy, rhythm and the power of voice.

Sunday: pick your pour, then Coltrane

Beer or wine, your call. Bright Eye Beer Co. in Long Beach throws its fifth annual Fright Eye Fall Fest, with pumpkin beers and Oktoberfest lagers. Out east, Bedell Cellars in Cutchogue hosts its 3rd Annual Harvest Stomp Party from noon to 3. Close the weekend in Huntington at 5 with John Coltrane at 100.

Everything else we'd squeeze in

The film festival, all week. Guild Hall in East Hampton is a Hamptons International Film Festival venue, with Industry Talks Out East on Sunday and a screening every night after: Musk on Monday, Tenzing on Tuesday, and on Wednesday Misty Green, which Chris Rock writes, directs and co-stars in.
A day outside. One Day, 3 Parks starts at Bayard Cutting Arboretum in Great River on Saturday, 9am to 5pm: guided tours, a fish hatchery, a disc golf demo and nature walks, then a closing party with live music and food trucks. The Scarecrow Garden is up at Old Westbury Gardens, and the Annual Wildlife Walk runs Sunday.
Tuesday night. Pizza Night with Swing Dance Long Island in Greenlawn starts with a lesson at 7:30pm. No partner needed.

Find your thing on Long Island

That's our perfect weekend. Maybe that's a little aggressive for one weekend, but it's nice to live in a place that can offer all of that. Daisy brings together 5,034 things to do across Long Island, so build yours: see everything happening this week, browse outdoors, nightlife or classes, or post your own event, free.
